  • The fitting of aftermarket steering wheels can affect your car being 'street legal'. Its a complex area and it is best to talk to your Engineer or local RTA or similar authority
There are ADR's that apply to the steering wheel design and there are ADR's that apply to steering wheels performance in a collision
Generally speaking you can fit any wheel to a car maufactured before 1971, and it requires no ADR approvals (although some states dont allow timber wheels or wheels under 330mm diameter)
Any car that was manufactured between January 1971 and June 1995 must have an ADR approved wheel (although some states require it to be padded and over 350mm diameter)
Any car manufactured after June 1995 needs an ADR approved steering wheel and will need to be Engineer Certified with regards to collision performance for it to be street legal (especially so if your car was manufactured with an air bag steering wheel)
